SCOTT BENZEL-BLAK BLOC (Numero Deux)
Available now on Spotify
The first release on Numero Deux Recordings is Blak Bloc by Los Angeles-based composer and artist Scott Benzel. The name of the piece derives from an organizational strategy employed by anti-globalisation activists. Blak Bloc combines guitar feedback, guitar synthesizer, and string quartet to unusual effect: Blak Bloc Movement I is based on a raga-like drone. A recurring cello-and-feedback pulse alternates with glissandi and pizzicato cello slowly evoking melodic themes. Blak Bloc Movement II begins quietly and builds into massive glissandi and lows, ending in a flurry of noise and atonal strings.
